Tisy v Krompachu, Remarkable yew tree in Krompach, Czech Republic

Tisy v Krompachu is a group of three protected yew trees in Krompach, Czech Republic. The oldest yew is 12.5 m tall with a crown 10.5 m high and 8 m wide, and its trunk has a circumference of 465 cm (2002). It grows on a slope near house No. 127 and is fenced.

Records indicate the tree was planted around 1580, giving it a presence spanning several centuries. According to accounts, Hussite forces gathered beneath its branches before launching an attack on Oybin Castle.

The yew appeared in episode 13 of the television series Paměť stromů, titled Nejen duby, buky a lípy. Locally it is also called tis v Krombachu, and old maps and postcards spread the legend of its 2,000-year age.

The oldest yew grows on a slope near house No. 127 and is enclosed by a fence. Two younger yews stand nearby: one 30 m west of the oldest, the other about 80 m northeast of house No. 25, left of the red-marked trail to the Hvozd summit.

The trunk is a fusion of three stems, which explains why its girth exceeds what its age would suggest; the tree branches at a height of 3 metres. It has the largest trunk circumference of any yew in the Czech Republic, measured at 465 cm in 2002.
