Kuks Hospital, Baroque hospital complex in Kuks, Czech Republic
Kuks Hospital is a Baroque complex designed by Giovanni Battista Alliprandi, set in a valley along the river with multiple connected buildings. The site includes the main hospital structure, the Church of the Holy Trinity, underground crypts, and surrounding historic gardens that form a unified ensemble.
Count Franz Anton von Sporck established this facility between 1707 and 1715 as an ambitious medical project near natural mineral springs. The foundation period marked an era when such institutions represented both wealth and Christian responsibility in Central European lands.
The Spanish Order of Brothers Hospitallers ran the facility from 1743 to 1938, making it a place where elderly soldiers and war veterans found shelter and care. The religious community's daily work shaped how the space was used and what it meant to those who arrived seeking help.
The entire complex underwent renovation between 2013 and 2015, with buildings and gardens restored to their historical appearance. Visitors should allow plenty of time to explore the grounds, as the site spreads across a large area with multiple structures to see.
Inside the complex is a preserved historical pharmacy museum displaying original Baroque furnishings and a collection of medicines from different eras. The pharmacy reveals how remedies were prepared and stored in earlier centuries.
