The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a Old Catholic church in Jablonec nad Nisou, built to a design by local-born architect Josef Zasche in 1900 and completed in 1902. It is a protected cultural monument and a key work of Czech sacral Art Nouveau.
Construction started in August 1900 under architect Josef Zasche and the building was dedicated in November 1902. Its creation reflected the period when Jablonec was transforming into a major industrial center.
The church belongs to the Old Catholic Church, whose Jablonec congregation decided on 20 October 1899 to build its own sanctuary after holding services only on holidays in the Protestant church. Local entrepreneurs funded it: Josef Scheibler gave the land and two-thirds of the cost, and Daniel Swarovski of Jiřetín pod Buková was among the donors. Old Catholic services are still held here twice a week.
The building is located on Husova Street and welcomes visitors interested in religious architecture. When you visit, be mindful that services may be taking place, so showing respect during prayer times is important.
Two larger bells were removed from the tower for wartime use in World War I, leaving only the smallest; in 1928 the parish raised money for two new bells named Faith and Love, and the surviving bell was named Hope.
