Jewish Quarter and St Procopius' Basilica in Třebíč, Religious architectural ensemble in Třebíč, Czech Republic

The site consists of a well-preserved Jewish Quarter with narrow streets and winding lanes, alongside a large monastery complex featuring a basilica built in Romanesque and Gothic styles. The basilica has three naves and shows building layers that developed over many centuries.

The monastery began around 1100 as a Benedictine foundation, and the basilica was transformed from Romanesque to Gothic style during the 13th century. The Jewish Quarter developed separately as its own settlement with its own laws and community structures.

The Jewish Quarter shows how two separate communities lived alongside each other for centuries, each maintaining their own spaces and rules. You can see this in the different building styles and the way streets are organized even today.

The site is accessible year-round, and both the Jewish Quarter and basilica can be explored in a single visit, though the church may have limited opening times. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as the narrow lanes have uneven surfaces and stone steps.

A completely intact synagogue still stands in the Jewish Quarter, offering a direct glimpse into religious life from centuries past. The cemetery with thousands of graves is equally preserved, showing how many generations made their home here.
