Brána Matky Boží, Medieval city gate in Jihlava, Czech Republic.
The Gate of Our Lady is a medieval city gate in Jihlava with a Renaissance superstructure built into the historical fortification walls. The structure reaches about 24 meters in height and contains an observation tower along with two permanent exhibitions about the city's defensive systems.
The gate was built in the 13th century as one of five medieval entrances to the city's fortification system. Today it remains the only preserved portal from that original defensive network and stands as a testament to the period.
The gate displays paintings by Gustav Krum that capture important moments from the city's past in color. These works allow visitors to see how a local artist documented the events that shaped Jihlava over time.
The observation tower is accessible to visitors and offers views over the city. The two exhibitions inside are easy to navigate and typically require about an hour or two for a thorough visit.
Inside the gate is a preserved fresco from 1402 that originally came from the Church of the Assumption, depicting a specific invasion event in the city's past. This artwork visually documents one of the city's most dramatic historical episodes.
