Skalka Castle, Baroque château in Podbřezí, Czech Republic

Skalka Castle is a baroque château in Podbřezí, 12 km northwest of Rychnov nad Kněžnou. A Renaissance stone building with two storeys of cellars cut into the rock replaced the original fortress around 1600; between 1736 and 1739 the Mladota family rebuilt it in an early rococo form rare in Bohemia. Its chapel takes up almost a fifth of the building's volume.

A fortress at Skalka is first mentioned in 1360, held by Ješek and Půta ze Skalky. Around 1600 it was replaced by a stone building with two storeys of cellars cut into the rock, and in 1736–1739 the Mladota ze Solopisk family rebuilt the Renaissance house into its early Rococo form. The state restored the castle in the 1980s.

The castle chapel takes up almost a fifth of the building's volume, making it one of the largest castle chapels relative to its structure. In 1973 a baroque staircase from the Church of the Assumption in Neratov, with four saint statues, sandstone vases and a balustrade, was moved into the castle garden.

Skalka Castle stands in Podbřezí, about 12 km northwest of Rychnov nad Kněžnou. It is not open to the public: since the post-1989 restitution it has belonged to the company Proteco, owned by Libor Knap and Pěva Holancová. The building can therefore only be viewed from outside.

The castle is not open to the public; it was returned in restitution to the heirs of its last owner, Emílie Martincová, who sold it to the company Proteco. A baroque staircase with four statues of saints, sandstone vases and a balustrade was moved here in 1973 from the Church of the Assumption in Neratov, and a court dispute over its return ended with the Supreme Court ruling that it stays because it is set in concrete.
