Mašťov Castle, Baroque château in Mašťov, Czech Republic.
Mašťov Castle is a baroque château in the Chomutov region of Czech Republic, distinguished by ornamental facades, turrets, and mansard roofs. Inside, the structure contains numerous rooms and halls where seventeenth-century design choices remain visible alongside later architectural additions.
The structure began as a fortified castle in the 14th century but underwent major reconstruction starting in 1571 when the Lobkowicz family acquired it. A baroque style transformation took place in 1661, creating the appearance the building maintains today.
The castle bears the name of its early residents and stands as a landmark that shapes the local sense of place in the surrounding region. Its ornate exterior reflects how powerful families of that era chose to display their wealth and status through elaborate architectural design.
The castle currently serves as an orphanage and is not freely accessible to visitors without advance arrangements. Guided tours in multiple languages can be organized, though visits require planning ahead and may have limited availability.
Near the castle stands one of the country's oldest Jewish cemeteries, dating back to the 15th century and still preserved. This burial ground tells the story of the Jewish community that once lived in the region and offers insight into their heritage.
