The Church of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist in Kadaň is a simple rectangular nave with a square presbytery, its walls 100–120 cm thick and the presbytery walls 160 cm thick, indicating a former tower above. Romanesque masonry survives in the square end and south side; the east Baroque gable carries a niche with a statue of Saint John the Baptist.

Documents from 1183 and 1186, though 13th-century forgeries, record that Prince Bedřich gave the settlement to the Knights Hospitaller, who founded a hospital and church here; the Romanesque core dates to the last quarter of the 12th century. Damaged in 1421 during the Hussite siege, it was rebuilt in late Gothic form in 1452 and served Kadaň's Evangelicals from 1539 to 1629. After fires in 1362, 1421, 1498, 1635 and 1811, repairs in 1812–1813 gave the church its present appearance.

The church's dedication to John the Baptist, typical of the Knights Hospitaller who founded it, survives in the name of the Municipal Hospital Foundation of Saint John the Baptist, which took over the hospital's property after its dissolution in 1787. Hospital pilgrimages were held here regularly until 1945. Today the building is rented by the town and used mainly for cultural events run by the Klement Slavický art school and Kulturní zařízení Kadaň.

The building is located in the center of Kadaň and is easy to reach on foot as you walk around the city. Access to the interior may be limited, so it is wise to check visiting hours before planning your visit.

The massive 160 cm walls of the square presbytery suggest a tower once stood above it; this east-end tower position is unusual in Bohemia and is considered an import from Franconia. The church also kept a set of medieval bequests: between 1467 and 1507, sixteen Kadaň burghers left money for its repairs.
