Church of Assumption of Virgin Mary

The Church of Assumption of Virgin Mary is a late Gothic structure with a tall rectangular bell tower completed between 1490 and 1493 that dominates the town. The interior features pointed arches and slim columns typical of the Gothic style.

Construction of the church began in 1488 on the foundation of an earlier building that stood before 1383 and was destroyed in a town fire in 1479. Baroque holy stairs added between 1735 and 1739 reflect continued religious use and investment in the site.

The original choir sits at an angle to the nave, showing how the building grew across different periods. This offset is still visible today and tells the story of how construction unfolded over centuries.

The church sits in the center of Kroměříž and is easily reached on foot, with the tall tower serving as a landmark to find it. The holy stairs stand outside the main building and can be visited separately from the church interior.

The bell tower historically signaled the start of work shifts in the local mines, creating a unique link between religious architecture and industrial life. This connection between the sacred and the practical remains an interesting part of the town's past.
