Church of Our Lady, church building in Klášterec nad Ohří, Czech Republic
The Baroque Church of Our Lady in Klášterec nad Ohří was built between 1743 and 1760 and dominates the cemetery with its distinctive southwest orientation. The building features two tall square towers with onion-shaped domes and a rectangular interior space with an oval presbytery, its ceiling decorated with frescoes from 1789.
The church replaced an older chapel from the early 1500s between 1743 and 1760. It was renovated in 1825 and again in 1967 to preserve its structure and beauty, reflecting the community's continued respect for the building.
The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, a devotion deeply rooted in the region. Visitors can see the old wooden statue of the Virgin from the 15th century, around which legends of healings circulate, especially for eye ailments.
The church is located in the northwest of town near the cemetery and is easily accessible via Karlovarska Street, with parking available on site. Visitors should be aware this is a quiet place best explored during daylight hours, where appropriate respect for the graves is expected.
A nearby martyrium was built in 1764 to serve as a monument for the dead and to hold special ceremonies. This small building with its decorative details and special glass roof together with the church creates a unique sacred complex.
