Hostinec U kaštanu, Historical pub in Břevnov, Czech Republic.
Hostinec U kaštanu is a two-story pub with a classical facade featuring six-axis symmetry, Tuscan pilasters, and a triangular pediment bearing the building's name. The structure contains a wine cellar in the basement, a cultural hall on the ground floor, and an art studio in the converted upper level.
The building emerged during the baroque period of Břevnov Monastery and received its classical redesign in the early 1800s. It gained historical importance when it became the founding site of the Czechoslovak Social Democratic Party in 1878.
The pub serves as a local gathering place where residents meet for meals and conversation. The name Kaštanu references the chestnut tree, a symbol of gathering and shelter in Czech tradition.
The building sits in a quiet residential area of Břevnov and is easily reached on foot, with clear views of the classical architecture from the street. The spaces are available for events or casual visits, so checking ahead about access to specific areas is helpful for planning your time.
In 1955, approximately one-third of the original structure was demolished to allow for the expansion of Bělohorská road. This reduction of the facade from nine to six axes permanently altered the building's original appearance.
