Castle in Planá

Castle in Planá is a multi-wing structure with an eight-story tower and three attached buildings featuring architectural elements from Gothic through Renaissance to Baroque styles. The different construction phases are visible in the varied facade designs and structural details throughout the complex.

The castle first appears in written records dating to 1251, and major fires in 1395 and 1617 destroyed significant portions of the structure. These disasters triggered major reconstruction efforts that reshaped how the complex looked and functioned.

The castle hosted successive noble families such as the Sinzendorf and Nostitz clans who shaped its architectural character. You can see how these families left their mark through different building styles and modifications they made to the structure.

The English park surrounding the castle is accessible to visitors who can wander the grounds freely. The castle interiors remain closed as private owners carry out preservation work.

From 1948 to 1991 the castle served as a military border patrol base, causing considerable damage to the historic structure. This military use left visible marks that still remind visitors of the region's recent past.
