Důl Jan Šverma, Coal mine complex in Žacléř and Lampertice, Czech Republic.
Důl Jan Šverma is a coal mining complex located in Žacléř and Lampertice in eastern Bohemia. The site includes underground shafts and galleries connected to coal processing facilities and various industrial buildings spread across the former mining area.
The complex was formed in 1958 from the merger of several mining operations and operated until 1992. After closure, portions of the site were transformed and now serve as a memorial to the region's long mining heritage.
The site is named after Jan Šverma, a prominent communist official from the region. Today the museum displays how miners lived and worked in these communities, with exhibits showing the tools and daily routines that shaped their work lives.
The site can be visited through the Hornický skanzen Žacléř with organized tours, and virtual routes are available online for those unable to visit in person. Sturdy shoes are recommended, and you should check if tours operate during poor weather conditions.
The former slag heap has been converted into a recreational park where visitors can bike and run while observing plant and animal species that have colonized the area. This transformation demonstrates how industrial sites can gain new life.
