Chapel of Saint Mary of Altötting, Religious chapel in Břevnov, Czech Republic
The Chapel of Saint Mary of Altötting is a two-story stone building in Břevnov with four separate altars honoring Saints Cajetan, Joseph, Joachim, and Anne arranged throughout its interior. A crypt below houses a space dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows.
The Prague Consistory approved construction of the chapel in 1665, and within a year Bernhard Ignatius of Martinic donated it to the Theatine order who used it for their spiritual practices. This act marked its transformation into an important religious site.
The chapel served as an important pilgrimage destination where visitors came to venerate the multiple altars and experience local religious devotion. Its role shaped how people in the surrounding area practiced their faith.
The chapel is currently not open to visitors as metal grilles secure all entrances and the building remains closed to the public. You can view the exterior from the surrounding area to appreciate its architecture.
The heart of founder Bernhard Ignatius of Martinic was placed inside the chapel after his death, an unusual practice that shows his profound devotion to the place. This relic made it even more a site of personal veneration by those who knew him.
