Church of Saint James the Greater, Cultural monument and religious building in Moravská Nová Ves, Czech Republic.

The Church of Saint James the Greater is a single-nave rectangular church with a semicircular presbytery, built on a north-south axis rather than the usual east-west orientation. A four-sided sacristy adjoins the east side, and a prismatic tower stands at the entrance facade. The presbytery and nave have barrel vaults with lowered faces, and the parapet of the music gallery rests on pilaster arcades.

Moravská Nová Ves was founded in the second half of the 13th century by Cistercians from Velehrad. The present church replaced an older Gothic church of the same dedication, demolished three years before the new building went up in 1773, largely paid for by Josef Václav of Liechtenstein, owner of the Břeclav estate. The Brno bishop Vincenc Josef von Schrattenbach consecrated it on 2 May 1807; a tornado destroyed most of the roof and windows on 24 June 2021.

The church is dedicated to Saint James the Greater, whose main altar dates from 1780. In 1785 two side altars were added: one to the Immaculate Conception with statues of Saint Rosalia and Saint Barbara, and one to Saint Joseph with Saints Vendelin and Isidore, patrons of farmers. The pulpit shows the Ten Commandments with an angel sounding the Last Judgment trumpet.

The church stands in the centre of Moravská Nová Ves, in the Břeclav district, with its prismatic tower at the entrance façade. The nave is oriented north–south rather than the usual east–west, so the presbytery faces north. The tower cross and clock were damaged by the tornado of 24 June 2021, and the clock still showed 19:27, the moment of the impact.

The tower clock stopped at 19:27 on 24 June 2021, the moment the tornado struck the village; the damaged hands kept that time. The cross on the tower tilted but did not fall, and the Mass in progress was ended with everyone evacuated unharmed.
