Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, Gothic Revival church on Boží hora near Žulová, Czech Republic

The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows is a Gothic Revival building in Žulová, distinguished by pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and tall windows. It occupies an elevated setting on Boží hora, with exterior and interior features reflecting the architectural language of the 1800s.

A wooden chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built on Boží hora in 1712–1713, and the site became a pilgrimage destination through veneration of a painting of Our Lady of Sorrows. A larger chapel followed in 1713; vandals damaged it in 1864, even tearing out the altar stone. The present Gothic Revival church replaced the wooden structure and was built between 1878 and 1880, then consecrated in 1880.

Boží hora became a pilgrimage site through veneration of a painting of the Virgin Mary of Sorrows, to whom the church is dedicated. Liturgical pilgrimages are held here twice a year, and during the main summer holidays the church is open to the public every Sunday. A Stations of the Cross leads up from the town of Žulová.

The site sits on elevated ground that is easily accessible for most visitors navigating to the location. The position on Boží hora means you will encounter stairs or slopes as you approach the entrance.

The wooden church of 1712–1713 was replaced by the present building, consecrated in 1880. Vandalism in 1864 destroyed the earlier chapel and even tore out the altar stone, which led to the new church. Twice a year liturgical pilgrimages are held here, and during the main summer holidays the church is open to the public every Sunday.
