Castle Bezdružice, Baroque castle in Bezdružice, Czech Republic
Castle Bezdružice is a Baroque château in the town of Bezdružice, Czech Republic, set on a hill on the western side of the main square. The building combines Gothic and Baroque elements that were brought together over several centuries of construction and rebuilding.
The site was first built as a medieval fortress in the 13th century. It was later reshaped in the late 18th century by Prince Karel Löwenstein, who gave the building the Baroque form it has today.
Inside the castle, a museum dedicated to Czech glass artists displays works from the surrounding region. The pieces on show give a direct sense of the craft traditions that have shaped this part of western Bohemia for centuries.
The castle has several levels with rooms from different periods, including a knight's hall and a chapel. Sturdy footwear is a good idea since the visit takes you through multiple floors and a range of room sequences.
Among the pieces in the glass museum is what is said to be the world's largest glass nativity scene, made by artist Jaromir Rybak. Many visitors walk past it without realizing what they are looking at.
