Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Gothic and Baroque church in Uničov, Czech Republic

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a house of worship in Uničov that merges Gothic and Baroque architectural styles. The building features multiple spires and decorative elements that reflect different phases of construction and renovation throughout its history.

The present church replaced an earlier parish church whose location and appearance are unknown; construction of the Gothic building began around 1290 at the presbytery and western towers, with 1330 often cited as its founding date. Fires struck in 1395, 1468, 1531, 1595, 1643, 1779 and 1796; after the 1643 Swedish occupation fire, the Gothic vaults collapsed and were rebuilt in Baroque form between 1651 and 1656. Following the 1779 fire, repairs in 1780–1782 under Maria Theresa's support introduced Prussian vaults, and Vodička's 1889 rebuilding restored Gothic windows and replaced the choir furnishings with Neo-Gothic pieces.

The church is the Roman Catholic parish church of Uničov, in the Šternberk deanery of the Olomouc archdiocese. Its name refers to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Visitors can see Gothic murals in the al secco technique, about 12 panels in two bands some 140 cm high, uncovered in 2007 during restoration of the side altar of the Holy Trinity; they show scenes from the life of Christ and of St Erasmus, and are dated to the 1390s.

The church stands in the centre of Uničov, with the main entrance through the richly profiled west portal, which has no tympanum. The interior is mostly Baroque, but Gothic cross vaults survive in the western bay by the gallery, in fragments of the side aisles and in the sacristy. Look for the restored Gothic window above the portal, rebuilt in 1993 from fragments found on the site.

The building earned official status as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and receives legal protection. This designation ensures its preservation and allows visitors to see a genuine example of architectural evolution across multiple centuries.
