Fortress in Volyně, Fortified house in Volyně, Czech Republic

The fortress in Volyně is a two-storey building of rough-hewn granite, 26 metres long, 9–9.5 metres wide and 12.25 metres high, with a slightly trapezoidal plan. Its corners are reinforced with dressed blocks, and the interior is lit by narrow pointed windows and rectangular stone-framed openings. A stair on the north side gives access, and part of the perimeter wall with a hexagonal corner bastion survives around the courtyard.

The fortress site was settled in the 11th–12th centuries; a stone dwelling of the early 13th century was found in the basement's northwest corner. The surviving two-storey granite building dates from the 14th century, and the bastion, moat and outer ward were added in the early 16th century. Volyně belonged to the Prague chapter until the Hussite Wars; in 1436 Sigismund of Luxembourg pledged it to Přibík of Klenová, and by 1629 the fortress was no longer mentioned in a contract, likely already serving as a granary.

The fortress has housed the Town Museum of Volyně since 1956. Its name comes from the town, whose lordship belonged to the Prague chapter until the Hussite Wars; the chapter's representatives installed burgraves here, among them Mikuláš of Hořovice in 1450 and Alexander of Buzice in 1507. By 1629 the building was no longer listed as a fortress, having likely been used as a granary.

The fortress stands in Školní Street beside the Church of All Saints. The two-storey granite building is entered by stairs on its north side, and a section of the perimeter wall with a hexagonal corner bastion survives around the courtyard. Since 1956 the building has housed the town museum, so access to the interior follows the museum's opening.
