Evangelical church, Protestant church in České Budějovice, Czech Republic

The Evangelical church in České Budějovice is a neo-Romanesque building of 1899 by architect Viktor Schwerdtner, built by Josef Hauptvogl. Its gabled central bay carries a bifora window and a small roof turret; the stepped entrance portal has columns with cube capitals and a twisted-rope band in the archivolte. The upper floor holds a flat-ceilinged prayer hall reached by a courtyard stair and lift, opening through an arcade into a side aisle and ending in an apse; the ground floor has a parish hall and the pastor's flat.

After the 1861 Protestant Patent granted equal rights to denominations in the Habsburg monarchy, a Protestant community was founded in České Budějovice in 1868 as a branch of the Lutheran church in Linz, raised to an independent parish in 1910. The architect Viktor Schwerdtner designed the church, built in 1899 by local builder Josef Hauptvogl; the foundation stone was laid on 9 July 1899 and the consecration took place on 8 December 1899. Until 1945 the parish belonged to the German Evangelical Church in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, and since 1959 the building has been owned by the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren.
