Birthplace of Karel Jaromír Erben, Literary memorial house in Miletín, Czech Republic

The birthplace of Karel Jaromír Erben is a stone-and-brick house in Miletín, rebuilt in its present form after a fire in June 1846 destroyed the earlier wooden building. A stone memorial plaque was unveiled on its wall on 22 May 1899. Today the house holds an exhibition on Erben's life and work, including three first editions of his ballad collection Kytice.

The building was constructed in the early years of the 1800s and served as the birthplace of Erben in 1811. He would later become a key figure in documenting and preserving Czech folk tradition.

The house carries the name of a writer whose work centered on collecting folk songs and ballads from Czech tradition. The rooms show how closely his connection to Czech folklore was tied to everyday life in this region.

The house is open to visitors on weekdays and weekends, with guided tours available for those who want them. It is best to check opening hours in advance since they can vary by season.

The present building is not the exact house where Erben was born: the original burned down in a large fire in Miletín in June 1846, and owner František Chmelík rebuilt it in stone and brick, giving it its current form. A stone memorial plaque was unveiled on its wall on 22 May 1899 before figures including Alois Jirásek and Jaroslav Vrchlický.
