Obděnice, Ruined fortified house in Obděnice, Czech Republic

Obděnice is the ruin of a fortified house in the village of Obděnice near Petrovice, Příbram District. Its most visible masonry survives on the plots of houses no. 2, 3 and 25; house no. 2 holds a room with a barrel vault with triangular lunettes and ridges, remains of a black kitchen dated 1599, a reused Gothic granite saddle portal and large areas of Renaissance plaster. The terrain, especially by house no. 34, shows traces of a moat.

Obděnice was probably founded in the 15th century; Jan Jedlice of Obděnice, a Rožmberk servant recorded in the village in 1452–1475, is considered its owner. Oldřich Smrčka of Mnich sold it in 1593 to Jakub Krčín, who had it substantially rebuilt. After Oldřich Myška of Žlutice joined the 1618–1620 estates uprising and lost his property, Polyxena of Lobkovice bought the estate in 1623 and attached it to Vysoký Chlumec; the fortress then lost its residential role and decayed.

The name Obděnice comes from the village; the fortress is first documented in writing in 1593, though Jan Jedlice z Obděnic, a Rožmberk servant recorded in the village in 1452–1475, is considered its owner. Jakub Krčín, who bought it in 1593, rebuilt it substantially and settled his dispute with Jindřich Doudlebský in 1601 by buying Petrovice with both Obděnice holdings. A black kitchen dated 1599 survives in house no. 2.

The ruins stand on the plots of farmstead houses no. 2, 3, 25, 30, 34, 31 and 35 in Obděnice, a village near Petrovice in the Příbram district; the most substantial masonry survives by the first three. The site is private ground, so view the walls from the surrounding lanes rather than entering the yards. Look for the trench line in the terrain near house no. 34.
