Kopidlno Castle, Baroque château in Kopidlno, Czech Republic

Kopidlno Castle is a château in Kopidlno, Královéhradecký Region, formed by a Renaissance two-wing core with an arcaded courtyard, extended by a southern wing bearing the Šlik coat of arms above its entrance and, later, a fourth Neo-Renaissance wing facing the park. An English park with a palm greenhouse surrounds it.

A water fortress protected by ramparts and moats stood here from the time of the Kopidlanský family; it is first documented in the 1527 purchase contract by which Zikmund Kopidlanský sold the estate to the Haugvics. Jan Haugvic rebuilt it in the mid-16th century as a Renaissance castle with two wings and an arcaded courtyard. After Swedish raids, Jindřich Šlik had the damaged castle rebuilt from 1648, and a new castle built at great expense is recorded in 1660, reusing the Haugvic layout and adding a south wing with the Šlik coat of arms. Ervín Šlik added a fourth Neo-Renaissance wing toward the park.

The château contains preserved wooden cassette ceilings and wall panels from the 19th century in two rooms of the west wing's second floor. These handcrafted elements reflect the interior quality typical of that period.

The castle grounds are an active secondary horticultural school, opened here in April 1948 after the estate passed to the education ministry in 1947. The school occupies the building, so the interiors are teaching spaces rather than a museum open to the public. The English park with its palm greenhouse belongs to the school grounds; ask locally about visiting before planning a stop.

The castle park is an English landscape park with a palm greenhouse, and it was this dendrologically valuable park and the large game preserve that led to the founding of a horticultural school in 1947. Teaching at the Master School of Fruit Growing and Gardening, moved from Chrudim, began in the castle in April 1948.
