Horní tvrz is a two-storey building on a rectangular plan, covered by a half-hipped roof, standing on a rise in the centre of Volfartice. Its corners are decorated with engraved quoins bearing partly preserved painting, and massive stone buttresses support the exterior. The windows and doors have stone surrounds from around 1540; a central ground-floor corridor once ended in a black kitchen, with rooms on either side under barrel vaults with ridge ribs.

The original Gothic Horní tvrz was built at the end of the 14th century, probably around 1383, according to the National Heritage Institute; its first written mention dates from 1504, when Vilém II of Ilburk sold it to Siegmund of Weissbach. It was rebuilt in Renaissance style during the 16th century. After the Battle of White Mountain the confiscated property, including the fortress, passed to the Grand Prior of the Knights of Malta.

The village name Volfartice (German Wolfersdorf) is tied to a founding legend: two brothers named Wolf or Wolfhard are said to have established the village and its two fortresses in the 13th century, one of them building the Horní tvrz. The site is recorded as a cultural monument, and a small-leaved lime called "Lípa u tvrze" stands beside it, protected since 1996.

The building at Volfartice no. 195 is privately owned and used for recreation, so it is not open to the public. It stands on a rise in the central part of the village, with the protected small-leaved lime called "Lípa u tvrze" (trunk circumference 338 cm, height 24 m) growing on the plot immediately next to it. The village stretches about 4 km through the hills of the Verneřice part of the České středohoří.

The name Volfartice, German Wolfersdorf, is traditionally traced to two brothers named Wolf or Wolfhard who are said to have founded the village and its two fortresses in the 13th century. The Upper Fortress was later called Schlössel, meaning small chateau. Next to the building stands the "Lípa u tvrze", a small-leaved lime with a trunk circumference of 338 cm and a height of 24 m, protected since 1996.
