Church of Saint John the Evangelist, Former hospital church now a house in Švihov, Czech Republic

The Church of Saint John the Evangelist in Švihov is a former hospital church, deconsecrated in 1788 and converted into a dwelling. It has a single nave with a rectangular plan and a three-sided presbytery, with a small sacristy attached to the south. The nave is vaulted with a net rib vault, and the presbytery has a star rib vault; a staircase on the north side leads to an upper floor and gallery.

The hospital church of Saint John the Evangelist is first documented in 1343, in a copy of a charter from about 1342. It was probably rebuilt around 1500, when an inscription above the triumphal arch records a reconsecration on 24 May 1504 under Půta of Rýzmberk. The Thirty Years' War left it short of money; before 1770 Václav Podivín Holeček, steward of the Chudenice estate, had it fully repaired and refurnished. In 1788 it was deconsecrated and sold at auction for 236 gulden to Tomáš Maršálek, then converted into a dwelling.

The building is no longer a church: deconsecrated in 1788, it has served as a dwelling ever since. Its changing names in 14th-century records — church, chapel, hospital — recall its origin as a hospital church. Above the triumphal arch an inscription found in 2004 gives 24 May 1504, likely the date of a reconsecration under Půta z Rýzmberka.

The former church stands southeast of Švihov's centre, surrounded by housing, so it is reached on foot through the residential streets rather than from the square. It is a private dwelling, not a visitable monument, so the interior and the staircase to the gallery are not open to the public.

Above the triumphal arch, an inscription discovered in 2004 appears to record the church's reconsecration on 24 May 1504, when Půta of Rýzmberk held the Švihov estate. After part of the nave vault collapsed around 1928, hay was lowered through the opening into the roof space.
