Defurovy Lažany, Baroque château in Defurovy Lažany, Czech Republic
Defurovy Lažany is a Baroque château featuring a rectangular floor plan with two stories. The building combines Baroque and Classical style elements in its stone facade and structure, typical of Czech aristocratic residences from that era.
The structure originated as a Gothic fortress in the 15th century and underwent major reconstruction during the late 17th century Baroque period. These extensive changes transformed it into the architectural form seen today and shaped its development as a significant Czech landmark.
The name derives from the family that once owned the estate, and today visitors encounter it as a quiet reminder of an earlier era. The layout of rooms and passages reflects how people lived and worked within its walls across generations.
The château is located approximately 30 kilometers east of Klatovy and can be reached from regional towns. Since 2019 it has been out of service, so visitors should plan to view it from the exterior and surrounding grounds.
The château once served as an agricultural school and still retains remnants of a historical brewery hidden within its grounds. These two functions reveal how the estate adapted its purpose and economic role across different periods.
