Komenium

Komenium is a school building in Olomouc featuring a Neo-Renaissance facade with horizontal cornices dividing it into four levels. Inside, three courtyards are arranged within an urban block layout, and rooms include a ceremonial hall with painted walls.

Built between 1873 and 1875, this structure was created to replace an older German school and address overcrowding issues in Olomouc's education system. The construction met the demand for improved teaching spaces and modern educational standards.

The ceremonial hall displays painted scenes with figures from science and art history, showing the importance the school placed on education and creative learning. Visitors can see how the interior decoration reflects the school's commitment to inspiring students through visual culture.

The building is located in the city center and can be viewed from outside, while interior visits are possible at certain times. It is helpful to check ahead since the site still functions as an active school and is not freely accessible at all times.

The ceremonial hall underwent major restoration in 2016 that revealed hidden frescoes and marble imitation paintwork beneath older layers. This work uncovered artistic details that had been covered for generations and showed the skilled craftsmanship of the original builders.
