Church of Saint Matthias in Bechyně, Gothic church in Bechyně, Czech Republic

The Church of Saint Matthias is a Roman Catholic deanery church on the square in Bechyně. Its core is a late Gothic hall church with two naves, a five-sided presbytery with buttresses, a prismatic tower on the north side and a two-storey oratory on the south. The tower, added in 1613–1615, has pilasters and an arcaded gallery under its dome.

The building originated in the 13th century and experienced major reshaping in the early 17th century, which strongly influenced its current appearance. These reconstructions show how the church's role shifted during different periods of the town's development.

The tin baptismal font, decorated with reliefs, dates from 1555. The painting "Adoration of the Magi", probably by the Flemish painter Cornelis de Vos, was earlier wrongly attributed to Petr Brandl. The pulpit is decorated with statues of the evangelists and a figural relief.

Access is typically through the main entrance at the front, and visitors can explore the interior during regular opening hours. It helps to use a local guide or information materials to fully appreciate the art historical details throughout the building.

In the presbytery gable facing the square stands a wooden statue of Saint Matthias from around 1740. In front of the church is a terracotta figure of Saint John of Nepomuk, probably from around 1780, which replaced an earlier statue of 1737. It was moved here from the inn Na růžku only in 1938.
