Kokořín Chateau

Kokořín Chateau is a castle that rises above sandstone cliffs with a cylindrical tower, Gothic architectural details, and thick stone walls forming defensive structures. The fortress sits within a landscape of rock formations and forest, creating a unified composition between the built structure and natural surroundings.

The castle was founded in the 14th century by Hynek Berka of Dubá as a defensive stronghold for the local nobility. After centuries of decline, entrepreneur Václav Špaček began systematic restoration in the early 1900s, bringing the structure back to functional condition.

The castle and its surrounding landscape drew Czech writers and artists during the 1800s, who saw it as a symbol of the Romantic movement. Visitors today can sense this artistic connection when walking through the preserved rooms and taking in the views that inspired these creators.

The castle is open daily from April through October with guided tours available in multiple languages. Visiting the battlements and upper tower requires climbing stairs, but the effort rewards you with broad views across the sandstone valleys and forest below.

The castle sits within sandstone rock formations that contain numerous caves and underground passages carved into the stone. Local people used these caverns for shelter and concealment during various conflicts throughout Czech history.
