Literátská škola

Literátská škola is a Renaissance school building in Prachatice distinguished by a decorated attic with battlements and three sturdy columns supporting the eastern facade. The east-facing wall displays sgraffito artwork featuring floral and geometric patterns.

The building was constructed in 1557 as a Latin school against the Gothic city wall and served to prepare students for university study. Records documenting teachers date back to 1312, showing the school's deep educational roots.

The building hosted theatrical performances created and presented by teachers and students, enriching the town's cultural life. These productions show that the school offered more than academic instruction, also nurturing artistic expression.

The building is located at Děkanská 30 and retains its original floor plan with Gothic elements like a late Gothic portal entrance and ground floor vaults. Visitors should observe the sgraffito details on the eastern facade from outside, as the interior is not open to the public.

The structure incorporates sections of the town's medieval fortifications into its design, merging military and educational architecture in an unusual way. This combination of defensive elements with Renaissance artwork demonstrates how buildings served multiple purposes in the town's layout.
