Budějovice Gate, Renaissance city gate in Latrán, Czech Republic.
The Budějovice Gate is a Renaissance city gate in Latrán that marks the northern entrance to the town with two distinctly designed facades. The structure displays fortification features with battlements and a pointed tower on one side, while the other side features decorative Renaissance elements.
The gate was built between 1598 and 1602 by architect Domenico Benedetto Cometta and is the last surviving example of nine original city gates of Český Krumlov. Its construction period coincided with the town modernizing its defenses and embracing the Renaissance style.
The inner facade displays a red color scheme with a sundial and Renaissance decorative elements that mark the shift from medieval to modern times. Local people use this passageway daily as a key route through the historic town layout.
The gate functions as the main entrance to the Latrán area and provides pedestrians direct access to the medieval center of Český Krumlov. The structure is easy to spot and serves visitors as a natural landmark when exploring the old town.
The gate displays completely different architectural designs on each side, serving dual purposes: the outer side protects with defensive strength, while the inner side impresses with artistic beauty. This duality makes it a fascinating example of how military necessity and aesthetic ambition were combined in one structure.
