Church of Saint Nicholas in Dobřany

The Church of Saint Nicholas is a Baroque building with a massive nave supported by intersecting elliptical forms. The eastern end features a chancel crowned by a copper dome.

Construction of the current building began in 1704 under architect Christoph Dientzenhofer, replacing a Gothic church from the 13th century. The new structure followed the trend of replacing medieval buildings with modern Baroque designs.

The church displays frescoes by Jan Lukas Kracker and František Xaver Palko, reflecting the artistry of the Baroque period. These works testify to the building's importance as a spiritual center of the community.

The church is generally accessible to visitors and functions as an active place of worship with regular services. Access is easiest from the town square of Dobřany, where the building sits in a central location.

Count Wenceslaus Kolowrat-Liebsteinsky funded the construction with a substantial sum of gold, underscoring the family's importance to the region. This generous support made the ambitious building project possible.
