The Church of Saint Catherine is a twin-nave church with a five-sided presbytery, whose plain walls are pierced by slender, richly carved buttresses. A rectangular chapel adjoins the north side of the presbytery, and a low barrel-vaulted porch on the north side of the nave once served as the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. The west facade is covered by a square bell tower with a pyramidal roof, flanked by two stair annexes.

The church dates from the first half of the 13th century and was built in early Gothic style; a parish is recorded in 1248. At the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries it was rebuilt in late Gothic form: the presbytery with a net star vault was built around 1487, and the two-nave vault, west gallery and south portal followed in the early 16th century, the work of the Rožmberk building lodge. Baroque alterations came in the 18th century, repairs after fires in 1791 and 1834, a Neo-Gothic remodelling at the end of the 19th century, and the tower was rebuilt after fire in 1900–1901.

The church serves as a gathering place for the Catholic community and shapes religious life in this small market town. Visitors can observe how the local faith is woven into the daily rhythm of the settlement.

The church stands on the square of Hořice na Šumavě, in the protected town monument zone, and is reached on foot from the surrounding streets. The tower's pyramid roof and the two stair annexes flanking the west front are the easiest landmarks to orient by. The former cemetery around the church was abolished in 1787, but part of its perimeter wall survives and is protected.

The church is a key part of the town's protected monument zone and dominates views of the square and surrounding hills.
