Church of Saint Michael, church in Horní Dvořiště
The Church of Saint Michael in Horní Dvořiště is a church building that has stood in the town for more than 700 years. Its interior shows Gothic features from earlier periods and Baroque elements from later renovations, with an altar depicting the Archangel Michael and life-size statues of Saint Joseph and Saint Anthony on either side.
The church was first mentioned in 1252 and began as a branch church of the Rožmberk family. It became a parish church in 1384, underwent renovation in late Gothic style around 1511, and was restored with Baroque decoration after a fire in 1738.
This church serves as a gathering place where the local community celebrates important moments and observes traditions. The mix of architectural styles visible inside tells the story of how the building adapted to the faith and needs of its people over time.
The church is located near the center of Horní Dvořiště on land that once held a cemetery, making it easy to find when walking through town. A cemetery and wall still surround the grounds, and visitors should dress respectfully and speak quietly when entering this active place of worship.
The bell tower received its onion-shaped roof crown around 1772, giving the structure a distinctive profile. This roof style was typical of Baroque architecture and made the tower visible from far away, serving as a landmark in the landscape for many generations.
