Church of Saint John the Baptist, Catholic church building in Palkovice, Czech Republic

The Church of Saint John the Baptist is a single-nave Baroque church in Palkovice, built in 1631, with a stepped five-sided presbytery, a western tower, a northern sacristy and a southern chapel. An inscription on the building gives its founding year, and the main altar is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.

A wooden church dedicated to Saint Peter stood in Palkovice from 1580 and decayed until it was demolished in 1850, replaced on the same spot by a chapel to Saint Maurice. The present Baroque church was built at the village's expense in 1631 and a small cemetery laid out around it; the parish house was finished in 1768. Until 1785 priests from Místek came to say Mass here.

The church is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, and its main altar bears the same dedication; two side altars honour the Holy Cross and Saint Francis of Assisi. Three bells cast in 1993 are named Jan, Anežka and Václav, and were consecrated on 11 July 1993.

The church stands in Palkovice with its west tower and a stepped five-sided presbytery; the north sacristy and south chapel flank the single nave. A small cemetery was laid out around it when it was built in 1631. Masses were served by priests from Místek until 1785, so check local parish notices for current services.

The church's three bells, cast in 1993 and consecrated on 11 July that year, are named Jan, Anežka and Václav. They replaced earlier bells twice requisitioned for war, first by Austria-Hungary in World War I and then by the Nazis in World War II.
