Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Catholic church in Nezamyslice, Czech Republic

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Nezamyslice is a three-nave oriented building with a plastered facade of coursed rubble stone, buttresses and a rectangular presbytery with transept. Three pairs of pillars divide the interior, the main nave being only half a metre wider than the aisles. The nave carries a late-Gothic diamond vault from the early 16th century; the lower part of the prismatic tower survives from the Romanesque phase.

Nezamyslice is first documented in 1045 as property of the Benedictine monastery in Břevnov, donated by Duke Břetislav. The church originated in the third quarter of the 12th century; its Romanesque tower base survives. Around 1350 the Romanesque building was modified, and around 1390 it was rebuilt in High Gothic style. In the early 16th century the nave received a diamond vault, and in 1736 the tower was raised and given a pyramidal roof.

The church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and was long tied to the Benedictine monastery at Břevnov, which held a provost's residence here. Coats of arms on the stone sanctuary in the presbytery recall the patron Půta Švihovský of Rýzmberk, under whom the nave was vaulted at the start of the 16th century. The cemetery chapel of St Erasmus holds the tomb slabs of the Lamberg family.

The church stands on a hill northwest of Nezamyslice's centre, together with the cemetery, the funeral chapel of St Erasmus and the Museum of Churches. The main entrance is in the west facade, reached by five steps. The tower's ground floor opens from the presbytery through a pointed portal uncovered during repairs in the early 1960s.

The side altar holds a large mystical Crucifixion painting, an old copy of the famous Isenheim Altarpiece by the German late-Gothic painter Grünewald. In the presbytery, coats of arms carved on the stone sanctuary recall the patron Půta Švihovský of Rýzmberk, under whom the nave's diamond vault is said to have been built in the early 16th century.
