Chapel of the Holy Cross, Catholic chapel in Pelhřimov, Czech Republic
The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a Neo-Gothic church building in Pelhřimov with a long main hall and a polygonal choir area positioned high in its tower. The interior features groin vaults that divide and structure the space, creating a sense of upward movement.
The current building was constructed between 1883 and 1886 to replace an older chapel from 1671 that had been destroyed by lightning. The new construction was necessary because the original structure could no longer serve the community's needs.
The chapel's Neo-Gothic design reflects the religious devotion of Pelhřimov's community in the late 1800s and shows what mattered to people at that time. Walking around it today, you can see how much care went into building something that would inspire faith.
To reach the entrance, visitors need to climb 37 steps, which requires some effort. The interior is currently not open to the public, so focus on viewing the exterior and its architectural details.
The building came about through a competition that local contractor Josef Šlechta won with his Neo-Gothic design proposal. His solution stood out among other proposals and continues to shape the town's appearance.
