Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, Cemetery chapel in Nová Paka, Czech Republic
The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows is a cemetery chapel in Nová Paka featuring Neo-Gothic architecture with red brick walls, pointed arches, and a turret housing two bells. The structure occupies one of the town's highest points and remains visible from multiple locations throughout the area.
The chapel was designed by architect Josef Mocker and completed in 1893, making it a significant work of the Neo-Gothic movement in Bohemia. It received cultural monument status from the Czech Republic in May 1958.
The interior displays painted ceiling details with celestial themes and an altar painting of the Virgin Mary, making it a place of devotion to Mary.
The chapel is located near the cemetery and is easily reached on foot, especially when approaching from the town center. Its elevated position provides good orientation points for visitors moving through the area.
Seven hand-carved wooden beams rise from the stone foundation and meet at a circular skylight, with each beam representing one of Mary's seven sorrows. This symbolic design gives the interior a special spiritual meaning.
