Church of Saint Mary

Church of Saint Mary is a Gothic building with a 45.5-meter tower featuring clock faces and a spiral staircase positioned between the north presbytery and east wall. The structure serves as a visual landmark of the town with its strong vertical presence and intricate stonework.

The first written mention dates to 1277 when church leadership passed to the local noble family, later coming under the administration of a nearby monastery. This early connection shaped how the building was maintained and its role within the broader religious community.

The interior holds a large 17th-century fresco showing The Death of the Virgin Mary positioned between two choir pillars. This artwork reveals the religious artistry that visitors can observe while walking through the space.

As an active parish church, the building is accessible both during and outside service times, allowing visitors to explore the interior spaces. When entering, keep in mind this remains an active place of prayer, so respectful behavior helps visitors and the local community.

In 1900 the building underwent major changes when its Baroque side altars were replaced with Gothic versions. This transformation significantly altered the interior's appearance and shows how religious buildings are sometimes reimagined rather than simply preserved.
