Dojetřice

Dojetřice is an ancient fortified settlement on a hillside near Sázava, located at approximately 415 meters (1,360 feet) in elevation. The site displays remnants of defensive earthen ramparts and ditches that define the boundaries of this early medieval settlement.

This fortified site was established during the early medieval period and served as a defensive stronghold for the surrounding region. Its hilltop position allowed residents to monitor the valley below and provide early warning of approaching threats.

The name Dojetřice comes from old Czech words meaning "place beyond the river," reflecting how people once understood their landscape through water boundaries. Visitors today can see how the elevated location was chosen to overlook the valley below, making it clear why ancestors settled and fortified this spot.

The site is accessible through a network of marked walking trails that lead to the summit of the fortified area. The paths cross uneven ground with some elevation gain, so sturdy footwear and adequate time for exploration are recommended.

Archaeological findings at the site reveal evidence of settlement from multiple distinct periods in Bohemian history. These overlapping occupation layers tell the story of how people repeatedly chose this location to build their communities across different eras.
