Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Gothic church in Staré Sedlo, Czech Republic.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands in the centre of Staré Sedlo, entered from the road running close below it. It is a single-nave church with a rib-vaulted presbytery ending in a polygonal apse, a sacristy and a prismatic tower on the south side, and the Chapel of St Catherine with the Švamberk burial vault on the north. Gothic windows survive walled up in the presbytery and sacristy.

Around 1300 the Kladruby monastery had the church built in Staré Sedlo, a village under its administration since 1250. In the 15th century the church and a nearby residence belonged to a branch of the Švamberk family, who added the Chapel of St Catherine with their burial vault. Baroque rebuilding later extended the presbytery and probably the nave.

The village came under the administration of Kladruby Monastery in 1250, and the monastery had the church built around 1300. East of the church a residence said to belong to the Magdalenites of Stříbro stood in the 14th century; in the 15th century the seat and church passed to one branch of the Švamberk family, whose burial vault lies in the Chapel of St Catherine.

Visitors should check when services are held since this is an active place of worship and may not always be open for free browsing. It is respectful to honor any religious activities that may be taking place.

The north side holds the Chapel of St Catherine, built as a Gothic addition with a Švamberk burial vault; its rib vaulting is noticeably finer than that of the presbytery. The church also has original Gothic windows, now walled up, in the presbytery and in the sacristy apse.
