The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk stands on a central island inside the water moat of the Na Baště fortified site in Tihava, near Kotopky in the Beroun District. The moat is eight to sixteen metres wide, and a low rise along its outer edge may be the remnant of a rampart. The whole area is protected as a cultural monument.

The chapel stands on the site of the older of two medieval strongholds in Tihava, called Na Baště, of which no written records survive; it was probably the seat of Mareš of Tihava, mentioned in 1393. The stronghold lost its importance after the mid-15th century, when the estate passed to the crown and then to Mikuláš of Landštejn, and the chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk was later built on its central island.
