Hajnova vila, Functionalist villa in Vysočany, Czech Republic
Hajnova vila is a functionalist-style house in Vysočany, northern Prague, distinguished by its large windows, flat roof, and unadorned facade. The building exploits the sloping terrain to create multiple levels that maximize natural light throughout the interior.
Architect Ladislav Žák designed and constructed this residence between 1932 and 1933 for Miroslav Hajn, who co-founded the aircraft manufacturer Avia. After its acquisition in 1964, the building remained a private home.
The house represents how Czech functionalist architects of the 1930s rejected unnecessary decoration in favor of clean lines and practical living spaces. It reflects the modern mindset of Prague's progressive families during that era.
The house stands at Na vysočanských vinicích 31 and is protected as a cultural monument, so it can be viewed from the street but not entered. Walking through the surrounding neighborhood gives a good view of the building and the broader area.
The roof includes a specialized viewing platform designed for watching aircraft from the nearby Kbely Airport. This feature highlights the owner's close ties to the aviation industry at a time when flying was still a new technology.
