Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Milevsko, Basilica and abbey church in Milevsko, Czech Republic

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Milevsko is a basilica and abbey church built of granite blocks, originally Romanesque and later modified in Gothic and Neo-Romanesque styles. It has two slender towers, a length of 56 metres, a width over 17 metres, and a vault height of 14 metres. The main nave is separated from the side aisles by arcade pillars, and the entrance is Romanesque. The early Gothic Chapel of St Margaret adjoins the west end.

The church was built as part of Milevsko Monastery, which was established in medieval times and remained an important religious center of the region. The buildings underwent various modifications over the centuries.

The church was founded together with the monastery, and much of the building was completed under Abbot Jarloch. The early Gothic chapel in the western part is called the Abbot's Chapel of St Margaret. The convent has a closed square plan with a central garden formerly called Paradise.

You can enter the church through its western main entrance and view it during opening hours. It is helpful to check beforehand, as the building may sometimes be reserved for services or special events.

The church was not always a parish church: until 1785 that role belonged to St. Giles' Church, while this building served the monks. The parish function was transferred here in 1785, after which St. Giles' fell into disrepair and was closed for safety reasons until 1883, when Strahov abbot Zikmund Antonín Starý had it restored.
