Former augustinian monastery, Baroque monastery in Moravské náměstí, Czech Republic
The Former Augustinian Monastery is a baroque building complex centered on Moravské náměstí with a pronounced central axis and Italian mannerist architectural details. The ensemble includes multiple wings constructed of stone that enclose an inner courtyard.
The monastery was founded in 1350 as a burial place for the Luxembourg dynasty by Margrave Jan Jindrich of Luxembourg. It later became a major educational institution during the Habsburg era.
The monastery served as a major center for education, drawing students from across the region to study within its walls. Visitors can still see the spaces where daily monastic life and teaching took place.
The complex sits in the center of Brno on Moravské náměstí and is easily reached on foot via nearby streets like Rooseveltova and Běhounská. The area is well-marked and offers multiple approaches for exploring the exterior.
The monastery library was where geneticist Johann Gregor Mendel conducted his landmark experiments on plant heredity using pea plants. His discoveries in this space would later shape the foundations of modern genetics.
