Church of Saint John of Nepomuk, Former church in Hradec Králové

The Church of Saint John of Nepomuk is a single-nave Baroque church on a rectangular plan in Hradec Králové, oriented to the north and topped by a saddle roof. It has no tower; the north side ends in a triangular gable, and the facade is crowned by a gable flanked by volutes and a triangular tympanum. The interior follows Beuron Benedictine art, with geometric painting and much gilding; the ceiling fresco shows a lamb surrounded by the evangelists and, at its outer edge, angels playing harps.

A royal castle stood on this site in the 14th century, used by queens Elizabeth of Bohemia and Elizabeth of Pomerania, and was demolished in 1423. The foundation stone of the church was blessed in 1708 by Bishop Tobias Jan Becker, and builder Vojtěch Schneider erected it between 1709 and 1714 to a design by an unknown architect. Bishop Jan Adam Vratislav of Mitrovice consecrated it on 1 September 1721, before John of Nepomuk had been canonised.

The church was consecrated on 1 September 1721, before John of Nepomuk had even been canonised, making it one of the first churches in the Czech lands dedicated to him. When he was declared a saint in 1729, three days of celebrations were held here in April 1730, with processions and the whole town lit at night.

The church has served as the city's concert hall since the first concert on 3 October 1988, conducted by Václav Rabas, and the Hradec Králové Cultural and Educational Society runs it. It stands in the former priest seminary complex, and it has no tower, so look for the triangular gable and volutes of the facade rather than a spire. Events are concerts rather than services.
