Poutní areál Maria Loreto, Pilgrimage complex in Starý Hrozňatov, Czech Republic.
Poutní areál Maria Loreto is a pilgrimage complex in Starý Hrozňatov, in the west of the Czech Republic, built around a chapel enclosed by cloisters that form a rectangular courtyard. A marked path with multiple stations winds through the grounds and out into the surrounding countryside.
A Jesuit rector named Jan Jiří Dasselmann founded this site in 1664, modeling it on the Loreto sanctuary in Italy. Over the following decades, monastery buildings and chapels were added around the original chapel, giving the complex the form it holds today.
The site draws pilgrims from both sides of the Czech-German border, who walk the route together and stop at each station along the way. Watching groups move slowly through the courtyard gives a clear sense of how deeply rooted this place is in the local spiritual life of the region.
The complex is accessible during the warmer months, generally from May through September, when the chapel and the path through the grounds are open on weekdays and Sundays. Sturdy shoes are a good idea since the route covers different types of terrain as it moves away from the courtyard.
Lightning once struck the walls of the complex but left the painting of the Virgin Mary inside the chapel completely untouched. Visitors who look closely at the interior can still see traces of that event in the exposed stone and original plaster layers that remain visible on the walls.
