Monument to Dýmová Hora, Stone monument in Strašnice, Czech Republic.
The Monument to Dýmová Hora is a stone memorial in the Strašnice district of Prague, dedicated to the homeless people who once lived on this hill. It sits in a public outdoor space and is made of worked stone pieces arranged to form a lasting marker on the site.
Dýmová Hora was an informal settlement on the edge of Strašnice where homeless people lived for many years, building a community on the hill. The memorial was installed in 2019, after that community had disappeared from the site.
The monument takes its name from Dýmová Hora, meaning "Smoky Hill," a name that came from the fires homeless people lit to stay warm on the slope. Visitors today often stop to read the inscriptions and look at the stone surfaces, which carry traces of real personal stories.
The monument stands outdoors in Strašnice and can be visited at any time without restrictions. The area around it is walkable, though the terrain may be slightly uneven near the hill.
The work was created by Prague street artist Epos 257, who interviewed former residents of Dýmová Hora and wove their words directly into the stone piece. This makes the memorial one of the rare public artworks in Prague that centers the voices of people who are usually overlooked in the city.
