House Okamura, Modern villa in Břevnov, Czech Republic
House Okamura is a residential villa in Břevnov composed of sixteen interconnected cylindrical towers that create three separate apartments with rooms of varying sizes across different levels. The cylinders have differing heights and their overlapping forms generate unexpected spatial arrangements throughout the structure.
Swiss architect Christian Kerez designed this residential project, completed in 2021, which broke away from conventional housing architecture. The building introduced a fresh approach to the traditional Břevnov neighborhood.
The cylindrical brick construction represents a departure from typical rectangular homes and has inspired contemporary Czech architects to reconsider how residential spaces are designed.
The three apartments have independent entrances through separate staircase tubes, while narrow spaces between the cylinders contain elevators, storage, and bathrooms. Visiting requires a willingness to navigate tight passages and move through multiple levels to fully grasp the layout.
The arrangement of sixteen cylinders creates fifty-eight distinct rooms that emerge at surprising angles and sizes, forming unexpected spatial connections throughout the building. This fragmented spatial landscape results from the overlapping forms, producing numerous alcoves and open zones.
