Speculum Alchemiae, Alchemy museum in Old Town, Prague.
Speculum Alchemiae is a museum located in the underground vaults of Prague's Old Town, displaying preserved laboratories and a collection of ancient books containing recipes for medieval potions and elixirs. The exhibits spread across three levels and document the tools and methods that early researchers used in their experiments.
During the 16th century, Emperor Rudolf II established an alchemical laboratory in this building, drawing numerous practitioners to conduct their work within its walls. The structure was later adapted, and its underground character helped preserve the earlier structures across the centuries.
The alchemists who worked here pursued a blend of experimental research and mystical goals to create gold and achieve immortality. Visitors can see today how these practitioners conducted their experiments in the preserved spaces.
The underground spaces can be explored gradually through guided tours that lead visitors through the different levels. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be aware that the stairs and vaults are narrow and the air stays cool.
During the 2002 floods, hidden tunnels were discovered connecting the museum underground to Prague Castle and the Old Town Hall. These underground passages reveal how the medieval city sits buried beneath the streets we see today.
